Causeway Bay Hong Kong shopping district - vibrant street scene with shoppers, neon signs, and modern buildings

Causeway Bay Events - May 2027

May is when Hong Kong's summer arrives in earnest: temperatures climb into the high twenties, humidity is high, and the rainy season begins. Causeway Bay's park calendar goes quiet, but the month is anchored by two public holidays on the same day — Buddha's Birthday and the Cheung Chau Bun Festival both fall on 13 May 2027 — plus Labour Day at the start.

This is a month for early starts and air-conditioned afternoons. The good news is that the district is built for exactly that: the MTR connects every major mall directly, and the harbourfront is at its best in the relative cool of the evening.

🎉 Public Holidays & Festival

Labour Day

📅 Saturday, May 1, 2027 — public holiday

A public holiday to open the month, and a busy shopping weekend in Causeway Bay. Malls run holiday promotions; the district is lively rather than quiet.

📍 Location: Hong Kong-wide; Causeway Bay malls

💵 Price: Free

🏷️ Categories: Holiday, Shopping

Birthday of the Buddha

📅 Thursday, May 13, 2027 — public holiday

A public holiday marked at temples across the city with bathing-the-Buddha ceremonies. In Causeway Bay the temples are small but welcoming; the day is a gentle, family-oriented one rather than a spectacle.

📍 Location: Temples citywide, including Wan Chai and Causeway Bay

💵 Price: Free

🏷️ Categories: Holiday, Religious, Cultural

Cheung Chau Bun Festival

📅 Thursday, May 13, 2027 — main day

The island festival shares its date with Buddha's Birthday. Cheung Chau's main day brings the famous bun-scrambling, a colourful parade and a whole island given over to the celebration; it is free to attend, though the ferries from Central are ticketed and very busy. Worth the crossing if you want a Hong Kong festival that feels local rather than staged.

📍 Location: Cheung Chau island — ferries from Central Pier

💵 Price: Free to attend; ferry tickets payable

🏷️ Categories: Festival, Cultural, Traditional

🎨 Expected This Month

French May arts festival

📅 Usually May–June — 2027 programme and dates not yet announced

Hong Kong's long-running French arts festival traditionally opens in May, with exhibitions, film, music and performances across the city. No 2027 programme has been published at the time of writing, so we are flagging it as an annual pattern rather than a dated event — check the festival's own site closer to the time.

📍 Location: Venues citywide

🎟️ Tickets: Varies by event

🏷️ Categories: Festival, Arts, Culture

🎓 Courses & Workshops

Rolling schedules rather than fixed 2027 dates:

Indoor studio workshops

📅 Rolling — most weeks

With the heat outside, May is a good month for an air-conditioned workshop: calligraphy, ink painting and craft sessions run at studios in Causeway Bay and Central on regular evening and weekend slots.

📍 Location: Studios in Causeway Bay and Central

💵 Price: Varies by provider and session length

🏷️ Categories: Course, Art, Craft

LCSD classes (Wan Chai / Causeway Bay)

📅 Rolling — seasonal class programmes

Low-cost fitness and cultural classes at district venues, many of them indoors. Enrolment opens in blocks, so check the current programme for the summer term.

📍 Location: LCSD venues, Wan Chai and Causeway Bay

💵 Price: Low-cost; check the current fee when you enrol

🏷️ Categories: Course, Wellness

Dawn tai chi and qigong on the Victoria Park lawn

📅 Rolling — most mornings, roughly 06:00–09:00

In May the only sensible hour for the park is just after dawn. The regular groups on the central lawn are still there, and the air is at its coolest.

📍 Location: Central lawn, Victoria Park, Causeway Bay

💵 Price: Free to observe; confirm any class fee with the group

🏷️ Categories: Course, Wellness, Tai Chi

🧭 Practical Notes

Cheung Chau on 13 May

Go early — the Central-to-Cheung Chau ferries are packed from mid-morning on the festival's main day and the last boats back fill quickly. Buy ferry tickets in advance and treat the crossing as part of the day out.

Heat and rain

Expect high humidity and frequent showers. Plan the middle of the day indoors; the malls are all MTR-connected, so a sudden downpour is not a problem in Causeway Bay the way it is in the countryside.

Quiet month for one-off events

With the holidays clustered on 1 and 13 May and the summer concert season not yet announced, May's one-off listings fill in later. Check HKTB and venue calendars nearer your dates.

FOOD AND DINING

While often visited for the Shopping the visitor should not forget that Causeway Bay encompasses a wide range of dining options, from the casual to the sophisticated. Within area are examples of many of Hong Kong's most authentic and distinctive styles, as well as international choices to fit all palates and budgets.
