Causeway Bay Events - August 2027

August is the quietest month for events in Causeway Bay, and deliberately so: it is the hottest and wettest stretch of the Hong Kong year, the typhoon season is at its most active, and the city's cultural calendar takes its summer break. There is no public holiday this month.

What August does offer is a single, atmospheric folk date — the Hungry Ghost Festival — and the district's air-conditioned side at its best. If Victoria Park features at all, it is just after dawn.

Hungry Ghost Festival (Ghost Day)

📅 Monday, August 16, 2027

The seventh month of the lunar calendar is traditionally when the gates of the underworld open, and Ghost Day is its mid-point. Around the district you will see roadside offerings — fruit, incense and paper — left on pavements for wandering spirits; in the evening some neighbourhoods stage Chinese opera for the ghosts. It is free to observe, and one of the few Hong Kong festivals that is quietly local rather than packaged.

📍 Location: Citywide; roadside offerings visible around Causeway Bay

💵 Price: Free

🏷️ Categories: Festival, Cultural, Traditional

🌳 Indoors & Year-Round

The district's hot-weather standbys, open all year:

The MTR-connected malls

Times Square, SOGO and Hysan Place are each connected to Causeway Bay station, which makes them the easiest answer to an August afternoon. They also keep their usual late-summer promotions running through the month.

Victoria Park — dawn only

The park is open 24 hours and free, but in August the only civilised hour is just after sunrise. The regular tai chi and qigong groups are still on the central lawn.

🧭 Practical Notes

Typhoon season at its peak

August is one of the most active months for typhoons. Watch the Hong Kong Observatory's warnings; on a high signal, ferries and outdoor attractions close and the malls and MTR become the safe default.

Quiet calendar

There are no public holidays and no fixed-date major events in Causeway Bay this month. Late-summer concerts and exhibitions are usually announced only a few weeks ahead, so check HKTB and venue calendars nearer your dates.

Ghost month etiquette

During the lunar seventh month some people avoid swimming or late-night outdoor activities as a matter of custom, and roadside offerings should be left alone. It is a good month to be a respectful observer.

FOOD AND DINING

While often visited for the Shopping the visitor should not forget that Causeway Bay encompasses a wide range of dining options, from the casual to the sophisticated. Within area are examples of many of Hong Kong's most authentic and distinctive styles, as well as international choices to fit all palates and budgets.
